I bought this because I loved Helen Steed's Shell book. This book comes up short. A very interesting subject but way too much filler. It seemed to me the author ran out of material about sea horses. A bizarre chapter (endorsement?) of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Rambling political ecology on global warming, which I agree with, but took away from the central subject. The final chapter was painfully full of random antidotes and very slow reading. Still a fan and read more of her works, perhaps she needs a different editor​

I often enjoy well researched works about obscure subjects. This book, however, was more detailed than I could tolerate and i discontinued it about half-way through. I would recommend it only to a reader who already has an estabished interest in sea horses.
Fantastic book about fantastic creatures.
Excellent unique account of these animals and all related information. A really enjoyable way of learning about these fascinating fish,
excellent book, beautifully and lyrically written. the perfect balance between the myths and the facts. read as quickly as any novel- there's nothing textbook-like about it, but you'll finish knowing so much more about seahorses and the state of the sea.
I have been studying seahorses as a personal passion for several years now and this is by far the most comprehensive and enjoyable read so far. I highly recommend it.
I am reading this book slowly, so I can relish Helen's love of the sea and all it's creature's...you will see what I mean when you pick this book up, and from the first page you will be enthralled by her love...take your time, don't rush it...enjoy the adventure!

From descriptions of Australian Aborigine "dream time" rainbow serpents to modern discoveries of new species, the book never ceases to amaze. Scales tempers her frustration over the illegal trade in seahorses for use in "traditional" medicines with a discussion of the ancient evolutions of such medicines and their deep-rooted place in some cultures. From her very first underwater encounter with a seahorse in its natural habitat, Scales takes us on a personal journey of discovery. In Poseidon's Steed, she presents a balance of science, history, and sociology, while raising ecological awareness. Of particular interest to me, was her information on the inadvertent capture of seahorses by trawlers. Having watched a fleet of trawlers go out to sea nightly from the Florida Keys, I now understand the danger. Something else that captured my attention was how modern genetics and the study of fossil remains helped identify the oldest of our modern seahorse species. Truly a worthwhile read.
